Position Highlights

The College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA) is seeking an Academic Advisor who will play a pivotal role in student success and development. This position encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities, from academic advising and registration assistance to data analysis and collaboration with faculty on curriculum design. The academic advisor will guide students through successfully completing their degree program and career development. The academic advisor will assist with course planning and departmental events. This position will support the development and implementation of strategies, systems and processes that support the achievement of desired academic and career outcomes, including the overall student experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advising
    • Assist CAPLA students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options. Conduct orientations and manage student registration across main campus, online platforms, and microcampuses.
    • Assess Advanced Placement (AP) credits and other high school-acquired credits for equivalency.
      Counsel students on options to satisfy degree requirements.
    • Provide guidance to students seeking to change their major, entering and exiting specific disciplines.
    • Offer specialized advising to students on academic warning, probation, or with eligibility concerns.
    • Monitor students' academic progress, determine satisfactory progress toward degree, and assist students in completion.
    • Identify current and potential needs and problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and coach students through those difficulties by developing academic actions plans, and/or refers to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
    • Advise on online major selections and work closely with AZ Online to ensure seamless transitions.
    • Provide guidance to students on scholarship opportunities and applications.
    • Assist students with mid-semester course modifications, ensuring their aware of academic implications.
    • Communicate with students and faculty via email, phone, and in-person to address academic issues, assess student progress, advise on life-work balance, financial matters, and mental health, and participate in student-centered events.
  • Administration
    • May assist with the Milestone process for admission to the Core Phase of the B.Arch.
    • Evaluate and approve transfer credits from other institutions to ensure students receive appropriate credit for their prior academic achievements.
    • May perform degree audits to verify that students meet all their program requirements to facilitate a smooth graduation process.
    • Monitor student retention rates and regularly report trends and potential areas of concern to the academic leadership team.
    • Conduct data analysis to provide school and college administrators with actionable insights, helping them make informed decisions regarding academic programs and student performance.
    Collaboration & Meetings
    • Work with faculty members to address challenges and suggest improvements in curriculum design to optimize student learning outcomes.
    • Attend faculty meetings as invited to ensure effective communication and collaboration across academic units. Collaborate with Advising + Recruitment Team by contributing strategies to attract and guide prospective students through their academic journey.
    • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications department to promote our programs and highlight the successes of faculty and students. Participate in the FRAME Squad, working on special projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing the educational experience for students.
    • Serve on university committees focused on advising, when feasible, bringing expertise to help shape effective strategies and best practices.
    • Participate as a member of CAPLA committees when invited or elected.
  • Communication and Financial Tracking:

    • May assist with the monthly newsletters, among other student communications, to keep the student body informed and engaged with the latest campus updates and events.
    • Assist with scholarships and other student financial matters, diligently ensuring students receive financial support and recognition for their academic and extracurricular achievements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of University systems to maintain student files and records.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
