POSITION TITLE
Art Handler-Shipping Associate, Full-time
POSITION DESCRIPTION
PELLE is seeking a full-time Art Handler-Shipping Associate who will be a part of our design company’s in-house studio production team specializing in the manufacture of custom/high-end light fixtures. Responsibilities include experienced art handling, packing, crating, and storing procedures, and the administration of all outgoing shipments from our Brooklyn warehouse. In this role, you must be able to work well independently as well as with our team to fulfill the studio’s main needs in shipping/packing/crating, as well as generally assist the studio during shipping downtimes. This is an on-site position, and you must be present to work in our Red Hook Brooklyn studio, Mondays-Fridays from 9am-5:30pm.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily check-in with Supervisor and team for outgoing shipment work orders.
- Assemble custom wood crates according to specifications and instructions; Ensure the safe and proper packaging of every item per company procedures.
- Coordinate and communicate with the supervisor and team so that deadlines are met and shipment updates are given daily.
- Book, schedule, and create labels for all outgoing common carrier, domestic and international freight shipments.
- Written and photo-documentation of all outgoing work in shipments; Log packaging status and shipment details into computer database daily.
- Written and photo-documentation of company packaging standards and methodology per product and on an evolving basis; Input into packaging chart detailed guidelines per outgoing piece.
- Receive all incoming packages at the studio and be present for all outgoing shipments including parts, studio supplies and production materials; distribute received packages to team members.
- Phone calls and emails to obtain shipping estimates in support of the sales team.
- Order custom crates and coordinate their delivery.
- Check supplies stock levels and order shipping/packaging supplies based on production needs.
- Assist with production needs, general studio upkeep, and studio projects as required during shipping downtimes.
- Keep shipping/storage areas consistently clean, useable, and client-ready; End of day sweep up.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience with art handling in a professional art studio, museum, gallery, or art shipping organization.
- Must demonstrate expertise in art handling techniques, packing, crating, and storing procedures and working with professional clients and teams.
- Ability to efficiently and safely handle, move, pack, unpack, load, unload sensitive and valuable light fixtures, high-value art objects, large wood crates and boxes.
- Physically able to lift and handle large and heavy light fixtures, up to 75 lbs, on a daily basis; Maneuver objects of substantial size and weight a daily basis.
- Wood shop/carpentry experience and knowledge of hand and power tools required.
- Demonstrate concern for detail, accuracy, and precise execution of all work.
- Prioritize the safety of personnel and artworks, always adhering to company operational guidelines.
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of Google Docs and Sheets.
- Possess on-the-job creativity and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to be self-organized and accurately follow instructions well.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time - assembling wood crates, packaging light fixtures; doing physical/manual labor.
- Must be adaptable and willing to take on a new direction for any given day/week since duties may slightly alter depending on the shipping needs of the studio.
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- Provide up to 3 Professional References.
WORK SCHEDULE, PAY & BENEFITS
The Art Handler-Shipping Associate is a full-time position in our Brooklyn studio. The hourly pay rate is $28/hour with future advancement opportunity. Work hours are a 37.5 hour work week of Mondays-Fridays 9am-5:30pm. No evenings, weekends, or company holidays. Pay period is weekly.
