JOB SUMMARY : Sapphos Environmental, Inc. (SEI) is excited to provide this opportunity to supervise a team of architectural historians engage in investigation, evaluation, and monitoring for diverse projects throughout California, including California High-speed Rail, renewable energy projects, and District and individual property assessments. SEI is actively seeking an experienced subject matter expert with relevant project management and team leadership experience to supervise the built environment team. The Built Environment Supervisor oversees a team of architectural historians engaged in preparing technical input to environmental compliance documents prepared under the National Environmental Policy Act and the California Environmental Quality Act, including windshield and intensive surveys for built environment resources, primarily in California. This full-time, exempt position encompasses technical, project management, and marketing responsibilities.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee Built Environment projects or tasks with small- to large-scale field efforts.
  • Direct and support staff in managing and executing archival research. technical report writing, state and federal permitting, data collection and compilation, and/or GIS mapping.
  • Provide quality control reviews of technical reports, input to environmental compliance documents, and nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, the California Register of Historical Resources, and local Registers for Built Environment resources.
  • Supervise a team architectural historians.
  • Contribute to technical approaches and cost estimates for competitive proposals.
  • Provide guidance related to federal and state regulation related to the evaluation of cultural resources, including the National Environmental Policy Action, the National Historic Preservation Act, and the California Environmental Quality Act
  • Serve as Principal Investigator
  • Coordinate with the Office of Historic Preservation and other government agencies
  • Supervise architectural historian work efforts for projects, including client interaction, tracking of budgets and schedules, and supervision of subconsultants
  • Supervise staff, including training on all areas of project goals and providing guidance on technical projects

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Meets the Secretary of Interior’s professional qualification standards in Architectural History or History, or a closely related field of study.
  • Experience in consultations pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
  • Experience with development of architectural historians or historians.
  • Relevant field experience in California.
  • Experience with technical reports required to support consultations pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Demonstration of excellent technical writing skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience supervising large crews and/or multiple crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts and planners.
  • Knowledge managing GIS/GPS data.
  • Proven ability to support proposals and win work.
  • Background in the application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Criterion for Evaluation of Built Environment resources for eligibility for consideration for listing in the Nation Register Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and preparation of Historic American Buildings Survey documentation
  • Demonstrated research, writing, and photographic abilities

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in architectural history, history, or a closely related field.
  • 3 years of experience in evaluation of Built Environment resources
  • 2 years of experience in leadership or supervision in the field or in the office.
  • Valid California Driver’s License or ability to obtain such a license before starting date

The candidate should be able to work as a member of a diverse team and manage projects and tasks. The candidate must possess strong communication skills, the ability to work closely with clients, and be able to supervise the work of others.
