Job Summary:
The Cabinet Maker at Jo-Lu Studio is responsible for crafting and installing custom cabinetry and millwork that align with our mission of creating meaningful spaces. Most of this work is in our growing custom residential cabinetry division. This role requires expertise in face frame construction, hybrid cabinetry, euro styles, cabinet assembly, field measuring, blueprint interpretation, finishing, and installation. The ideal candidate embodies our commitment to artistry and innovation, bringing both skill and passion to their work. Preferably, we are looking for a custom cabinet maker who worked in their own shop or a small shop and understands how to execute cabinets at all levels, from design development to final install. This role will mostly support custom residential cabinetry but we also produce work in commercial environments as well. We welcome all candidates but candidates who have worked in larger manufacturing style shops will need to display their abilities as a custom maker as opposed to an operator who has learned a variety of mill-working skills such as machining stock, sanding, assembly, etc. Talented trade school graduates are encouraged to apply as well.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Cabinet Fabrication & Assembly
• Custom Cabinetry: Build custom cabinetry using traditional and modern woodworking techniques, ensuring each piece reflects Jo-Lu Studio’s dedication to quality and meaning.
• Component Construction: Construct and assemble face frames, cabinet boxes, drawers, and doors with precision and attention to detail.
• Material Handling: Select and prepare wood and composite materials, maintaining quality control throughout the fabrication process.
2. Face Frame and Euro style Construction
• Measurement & Cutting: Accurately measure, cut, and assemble face frames according to blueprint specifications, utilizing techniques such as pocket hole joinery and mortise-and-tenon for durable construction.
• Alignment & Attachment: Ensure precise alignment and secure attachment of face frames to cabinet boxes, upholding Jo-Lu Studio’s standards of craftsmanship.
3. Field Measuring & Blueprint Interpretation
• On-Site Measurements: Conduct on-site field measurements to ensure accurate cabinetry fitment, collaborating with clients to understand their vision and space requirements.
• Blueprint Analysis: Read and interpret architectural drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications, communicating effectively with designers, contractors, and clients to confirm project details.
4. Cabinet Installation (minimal)
• Site Preparation: Prepare installation sites, ensuring they are ready for cabinetry placement.
• Installation: Install cabinets, millwork, and built-ins at various job sites, ensuring all installations are level, plumb, and securely fastened.
• Adjustments: Adjust doors, drawers, and hardware for proper function, addressing any installation challenges with innovative solutions.
5. Painting & Finishing
• Surface Preparation: Prepare surfaces for finishing, including sanding, filling, and priming, to achieve a flawless base.
• Finish Application: Apply stains, paints, conversion varnish, or other finishes using appropriate techniques, ensuring a professional and durable finish that aligns with the client’s vision.
• Quality Assurance: Ensure smooth, even coatings with proper drying and curing times, maintaining Jo-Lu Studio’s high standards of quality.
6. Drafting & Designing collaboration
• Collaboration: Work closely with designers and project managers to create shop drawings and detailed plans that reflect the client’s desires and Jo-Lu Studio’s artistic approach.
• Design Development: Use CAD software or hand sketches to draft cabinetry designs, modifying and refining them based on material availability and client preferences.
• Compliance: Ensure designs meet structural and functional requirements, as well as Jo-Lu Studio’s commitment to creating spaces with meaning.
7. Safety & Equipment Maintenance
• Tool Operation: Operate woodworking tools and machinery, including table saws, jointers, planers, routers, and CNC machines, following safety protocols.
• Workspace Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized workspace, adhering to shop safety protocols.
• Equipment Care: Conduct routine maintenance on tools, reporting any necessary repairs to ensure a safe working environment.

Requirements & Qualifications:
• Experience: 5+ years in cabinet making, millwork, or woodworking, with a portfolio demonstrating craftsmanship and creativity.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings; strong understanding of face frame construction and cabinet assembly techniques.
• Field Expertise: Experience with field measuring and installation, ensuring accurate fitment and functionality.
• Finishing Knowledge: Knowledge of finishing techniques, including staining, painting, and lacquering, with an eye for detail.
• Design Skills: Familiarity with drafting and design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, or similar preferred), with the ability to translate concepts into tangible designs.
• Physical Ability: Ability to lift and move heavy materials (50+ lbs).
• Soft Skills: Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability on job sites, and the ability to work independently or in a team setting.
• Commitment: Dedication to meeting deadlines while maintaining high-quality craftsmanship, aligning with Jo-Lu Studio’s mission and vision.
