Job Description

DZL is a market leader in real estate development and property management, featuring a high-profile mixed-use portfolio of office, retail, entertainment, hospitality, and co-working properties. The neighborhood sits in Nashville’s downtown urban core, inside the SoBro and Gulch neighborhoods. The campus spans 16 contiguous acres, with numerous core infill sites ready for development, anchored by iconic adaptive reuse properties, cornerstones of the city.

We’re seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the company’s financial operations. The Controller will function under the direction of both the Chief Financial Officer and the business owner. This position is responsible for overseeing the accounting department and directing the financial plans of the business by providing financial analysis, planning, and reporting to help inform strategic decision-making and ensure the business’s financial health.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Overseeing the organization’s financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, lease billing and payroll.
  2. Develop and maintain accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure that the business’s accounting records, and financial statements are accurate and timely.
  3. Establish and monitor internal controls to mitigate risks and prevent fraud.
  4. Prepare balance sheet for various business units and ensure effectiveness of the process.
  5. Supervise account reconciliation, manage commercial accounts, and update journal units.
  6. Review all financial operating processes to ensure compliance with GAAP.
  7. Oversee month-end, quarterly and annual closing of accounts.
  8. Manage the organization’s financial resources, including budgeting and forecasting.
  9. Manage cash flow and ensure the business is making sound financial decisions.
  10. Develop and implement financial planning and budgeting processes to support the overall goals and objectives of the business.
  11. Analyze and interpret financial data to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  12. Establish and maintain financial reports and business plans.
  13. Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with government regulatory reporting and tax filings.
  14. Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and other financial professionals.
  15. Coordinates the provision of information to external auditors.
  16. Provides financial analysis on capital investments, pricing decisions and contract negotiations.
  17. Prepare management reports and external filings, audits, etc.
  18. Ensure compliance to all tax procedures and process tax returns.
  19. Perform specific tasks as assigned by the business owner or CFO.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
  • Master’s degree in finance or accounting preferred.
  • CMA or CPA designation required.

Skills and Knowledge Required

  1. Comprehensive understanding of accounting and financial principles.
  2. Ability to translate complex financial data into meaningful insights to support decision-making.
  3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication
  5. Proficiency in financial and accounting software (specifically Argus preferred)
  6. Ability to manage large amounts of financial data efficiently.
  7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit at a desk for prolonged periods while working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
