Job Description

We are seeking a Curriculum Designer to develop a middle school advisory curriculum (grades 6-8) centered around the VIA Institute’s Character Strengths framework and its application to upstander behavior and leadership. The curriculum will align with the school’s mission of empowering students to recognize and develop their strengths while learning how to take action in their school and beyond.

The designer will create engaging, reflective, and interactive lesson plans that help students:

  • Understand and apply character strengths in real-life situations
  • Explore the role of character strengths in being an upstander and leader
  • Reflect on personal and social responsibility
  • Develop skills to navigate challenges, build empathy, and make ethical decisions

Key Responsibilities
  • Design a scope and sequence for advisory lessons in alignment with the provided framework
  • Create engaging, student-centered lesson plans with hands-on activities, reflection prompts, and discussion guides
  • Ensure lessons are developmentally appropriate for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
  • Incorporate real-world applications, diverse perspectives, and culturally relevant examples
  • Collaborate with Center staff, school staff, and stakeholders to align the curriculum with broader educational goals and content areas 
  • Provide recommendations for teacher facilitation, including training materials and guidance for implementation
  • Contribute to additional curricular resource projects that align with HHC’s mission of ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust inspire action today.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional design, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years experience in curriculum design, instructional design, educational program development, or classroom teaching (preferably in middle school or character education)
  • Background in social-emotional learning, character education, and/or leadership development strongly preferred 

Skills & Competencies

  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Familiarity with VIA Institute’s Character Strengths framework is highly preferred
  • Knowledge of best practices in project-based learning and real-world application of character strengths
  • Ability to create engaging, interactive lessons that go beyond traditional classroom instruction
  • Experience developing history-based educational resources (especially related to the Holocaust or upstander behavior)
  • Background or interest in Holocaust education is a plus
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills for working with Center staff, school leadership, and educators.
  • Strong writing, research, and organizational skills

This is a short-term contract position to develop curriculum for the 2025-2026 school year.
