Job Description

Position Summary:

Bancroft is looking for an on-call Field Archaeologist to conduct on-site archaeological research, excavations, and surveys to support archaeological projects. This role involves applying scientific methods to uncover, document, and preserve artifacts, structures, and other cultural heritage materials. The Field Archaeologist works in various outdoor environments, conducting fieldwork while adhering to health and safety standards and ethical archaeological practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Excavations : Participate in archaeological excavations, including digging, screening, and analyzing soil samples to uncover and recover artifacts and cultural materials.
  • Surveying and Mapping : Perform archaeological surveys, identifying and recording archaeological sites and features. Utilize GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and other mapping tools to document site locations and findings.
  • Artifact Documentation : Catalog and document artifacts, features, and excavation data according to project protocols. Ensure accurate and organized field notes and records.
  • Laboratory Analysis Support : Assist in the cleaning, cataloging, and analysis of artifacts in the laboratory. Prepare samples for further analysis, such as carbon dating or pottery typology.
  • Data Management : Collect and organize field data, ensuring proper storage, processing, and archiving of materials.
  • Collaboration and Reporting : Work closely with senior archaeologists, project managers, and other field team members to achieve project goals. Contribute to written reports and presentations based on field findings.
  • Preservation and Conservation : Ensure that excavation methods prioritize the preservation of cultural materials and sites. Handle artifacts with care, using conservation methods where necessary.
  • Compliance : Follow all legal, ethical, and environmental guidelines in fieldwork, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding cultural heritage and site protection (NHPA, CEQA, NAGPRA).
  • Training and Supervision : Depending on seniority, supervise and train field assistants, interns, or volunteers in excavation techniques, data collection, and field documentation.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education :
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree may be preferred for more senior positions.
  • Experience :
  • Previous field experience in archaeology is highly desirable, especially in excavation and survey work.
  • Familiarity with archaeological methods, including excavation techniques, survey methods, and site documentation.
  • Experience with GIS and mapping software is a plus.
  • Familiarity with artifact cataloging, photography, and field documentation practices.
  • Skills :
  • Strong fieldwork skills, including excavation, surveying, and data recording.
  • Good organizational and analytical skills for managing field notes, artifacts, and data.
  • Ability to work in challenging outdoor environments and physical conditions.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with team members.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to archaeological integrity and ethics.
  • Certifications :
  • Valid driver’s license (for transportation to and from field sites).
  • Field safety and first-aid certifications may be required, depending on project location.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Extensive travel to remote or rural field sites, sometimes requiring long periods of time away from home.
  • Physical demands include walking long distances, carrying equipment, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to outdoor environments, including rugged terrain, and potentially extreme temperatures.
  • Fieldwork can involve long hours, including early mornings, weekends, and occasional evening work.
