Position Overview Updated: 7-23-2024 with new salary rates effective 7-1-2024 Salary Range: $25.5337 - $28.1609/hour. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 3 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.
Work Schedule: Tuesday 11:15 a.m. - 8:15 p.m., Wednesday through Friday 9:15 a.m. - 6:15 p.m., Saturday 8:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. with an occasional Friday night.
Job Summary: Under direction, performs a variety of professional librarian duties in support of library services and programs, focusing primarily on administering operations, services, and programs of the Co+Lab, a multigenerational makerspace. This position focuses heavily on patron engagement and instruction on Co+Lab technology and equipment.
Scope of Responsibility: Incumbents have a very high degree of understanding of department and functional operations and are able to work with considerable initiative. Working with management guidance, incumbent administers and implements department policy and procedure. Incumbent provides the primary services and programs for the Co+Lab at the library, including but not limited to leading workshops, coordinating with volunteers and professionals to provide programming, researching and implementing appropriate services, performing outreach trips and visits. Incumbents must have the ability to make judgments based on their analysis of the situation. Incumbents must have the ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters and provide detailed procedural explanations or technical information. Incumbents provide supervision and training to support staff and volunteers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Supervision - Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level staff and volunteers.
- Staff supervision may include seasonal hires; volunteers may consist of college mentors and workshop instructors in addition to normal library volunteers.
- Provides proper guidance when assigning work.
- Prioritizes work assignments to lower level staff when required.
- Provides proper training and assistance to lower level staff when required.
- Oversees Library operations in the absence of Library managers.
Library Operations - Reviews, selects, and orders Library materials in print, audiovisual, digital, and other formats to suit needs of patrons.
- Manages the Library's collection of print, audiovisual, digital, and other materials; analyzes, updates, and orders age-appropriate materials for various sections within the library.
- Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in the assigned areas of service.
- Performs circulation duties using a computerized circulation system and bibliographic utility including checking materials in and out, registering patrons, updating patron accounts, collecting fines, and creating special entries.
- Maintains public and staff areas of the Library through material & resource recovery and cleanup, shelves books and other resources, prepares for opening & closing, equipment maintenance.
- Maintains and continually updates knowledge of new and existing library materials, resources, and technology.
- Actively participates in updating websites and social media platforms for the Library.
- Produces digital promotional materials for publications, websites, social media and other distribution.
- Contributes to the monthly Library newsletter.
- Participates on a variety of committees, boards, and task forces; attends and participates in professional group meetings.
- Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of library and information science, makerspaces, and technology.
Patron Relations - Initiates communications with patrons to determine needs for assistance in finding information or materials, obtaining a library card or other resources or services.
- Instructs patrons and staff in the use of the Library and its resources and equipment; performs & assists patrons in computer searches; instructs patrons on the use of the Dewey decimal classification system, uses of all other Library equipment.
- Refers Library patrons to community organizations and other alternate resources not within the Library.
- Maintains local community contacts; initiates, develops, and maintains positive relations with patrons and others as relevant to local library operations and services.
- Schedules and conducts orientation tours of the library for groups and individuals.
- Responds to and resolves inquiries and complaints.
Program Development & Delivery - Performs a variety of public relations duties; makes public speaking appearances before local groups and organizations; promotes Library usage through programming, public relations, outreach, and tours.
- Develops age appropriate or target audience educational and promotional programs, and delivers programs to target audiences.
- Provides instruction to patrons in the use of Library and online resources, and computer software and hardware.
Reference Services - Provides in-depth information at the Reference Desk using authoritative resources to research and answer inquiries.
- Develops digital archive of historical documents, including selection, digitization, development of metadata, and online uploads.
- Supervises and coordinates planning and implementation of Co+Lab operations and programming; including programs and technology suited to interests and needs of all ages.
Floating - Staffs all public services in substitute capacity in the absence of other staff. Requires a broad knowledge of all services.
Areas of Specialty Co+Lab Services - Administers the Co+Lab, and runs the lab during open hours and scheduled programs and appointments.
- Supervises and coordinates planning and implementation of Co+Lab programming.
- Establishes and develops business relationships with instructors and mentors for technology training.
- Assists and instructs patrons in the Co+Lab with a variety of computer software and equipment including, but not limited to, 3-D printers, laser cutters and engravers, sewing machines, and video and audio production tools.
- Administers technology instruction through library online course platform.
- Manages the library's Co+Lab2Go, a collection of circulating equipment.
- Maintains equipment and software for Co+Lab, including the inventory of consumable materials.
- Coordinates with educators and organizations to promote and market Co+Lab services through community outreach activities and programs, including but not limited to, the Library Express Lockers.
Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Skills Required Qualifications & Skills: - Master's degree in Library Science or a related field
OR - Bachelor's degree with specialized certification in the library or related field and more than one year of experience
AND - Strong interpersonal skills
- A current Montana driver's license or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment
Preferred Qualifications & Skills: - High level of energy and self-motivation to create new services and programs
- The ability to work in an environment that requires flexibility, collaboration, and communication.
- Experience with city government and knowledge of department or function operations
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Work is indoors in an office environment. Requires limited physical effort moving up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis. Requires high attention to detail and deadlines. Exposure to disagreeable elements, in moderate intensity, less than 5% of the time.
