Mobile App Developer

About the Opportunity

National Internet Observatory project at Northeastern University () entails building a secure, privacy-protecting, ethically robust, scientifically valid online behavioral research observatory. This observatory captures the online behavior of a large sample of volunteers as well as details of the algorithmically driven decisions of the major platforms of the Internet. The observatory enables a wide range of research concerning the Internet, including examination of the state of the information ecosystem, analysis of damaging online behavior of a variety of types, and generally studies of manifold aspects of the online world. This infrastructure fills a gap by providing researchers with high-quality data on human and platform behavior at a scale and granularity that will allow transformational investigation of this new and all-pervasive phenomenon.

Ability to develop for both major platforms (iOS, Android) natively and experience with cross-platform mobile technology (React Native/ Flutter)
  • Experienced with all phases of app development - from prototyping to publishing to the App Store or Google Play
  • Experience using RESTful APIs to integrate mobile applications to server-side systems
  • Interest and experience in backend development and developing microservices/APIs to provide data for mobile clients is a plus. Proficiency with cloud based web services. Solid understanding of the full mobile development life cycle. Proficiency in integrating with web services and parsing JSON data. Solid understanding of relational database development and SQL experience. Knowledge and skills required for this position are normally obtained through a bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Information Technology/Information Science or 'STEM' Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and at least 2-3 years of experience designing, developing, unit testing, and deploying iOS and Android based solutions using common standards and frameworks

    Responsibilities:

    Continue to develop the NIO Android Mobile App, including bug fixes and new data-collection features

    Perform analysis and research on the data collected for mobile, both to ensure integrity and to add new data insights for NIO customers

    Support Co-Op and other Developers on the mobile team, helping them to implement features and guiding them on tasks. Also meet regularly with them and provide code reviews.

    Qualifications:

    B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent field. Experience with data analysis, specifically for network traffic. Experience with mobile devices and mobile apps. Understanding of key security and privacy concerns with respect to data collection and analysis.
