Job Summary:

This is an exciting time to join the Center for Student Success at Oberlin College and Conservatory. The Student Success Coach position is a full-time, 12-month, staff position in the Division of Student Affairs. Under the direct supervision of the Dean and Assistant Dean of Student Success, this position will assist in advancing Oberlin Colleges retention efforts and will play a key role in the realignment of the Center for Student Success programming initiatives.


The Student SuccessCoach will serve as the point of contact for all students at Oberlin College with a deliberate focus on first and second year students. This position will also provide proactive 1:1 holistic coaching for with an assigned caseload aimed at helping students navigate their Oberlin College and Conservatory collegiate experience.


In collaboration with the CSS staff the Student Success Coach will assist with planning purposeful activities that support student success; plan and facilitate workshops for current students, parents, faculty, staff and prospective students; develop connections to campus resources for student access and; assist in the hiring and training of staff; and contribute to operations and other protocol measures that support quality program assessment and evaluation.

The Student Success Coach will provide support for existing programs aimed to support student success and retention and assist with the coordination of new initiatives by working closely with the CSS leadership staff, and campus partners including but not limited to: the Intercultural Engagement, Office of Disability Services, Residential Life, Academic Advising, Student Leadership and Involvement, SOAR / PAL program, Career Exploration and Development etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet one-on-one as well as in group settings with students to provide advice and counsel a variety of topics.
  • Analyze, compare, and evaluate various courses of actions for students within scope of responsibilities and refer students to appropriate university resources as needed.
  • Accept and act on referrals to support student needs and conduct follow-up on utilization of resources.
  • Follow program evaluation protocol to assess effectiveness and impact on students and the university community.
  • Assist in the development of content and participate in workshop presentations that support the growth and achievement participants' and address interests, challenges, knowledge and experiences related to overall success.
  • Coordinate opportunities to build community and a supportive network of Obie scholars.
  • In collaboration with campus partners, identify and coordinate resources, experiential learning opportunities, and resource connections to enhance student awareness and preparation for collegiate and post-baccalaureate opportunities.
  • Maintain student participation and engagement documentation and data files.
  • Use theoretical practices for leadership development around issues of diversity, race, ethnicity, as it relates to intercultural professional development.
  • Manage, communicate, track and analyze elements related to student progress, involvement and participation via tools, such as ENGAGE .
  • Participate in regular staff and team meetings and contribute to program enhancements as needed.
  • Contribute to processes that support comprehensive program evaluation.
  • Develop documentation and resource acquisition to curate knowledge, opportunities, and resources to enhance program development, implementation, and outcomes.
  • Contribute to the success of CSS programs, activities, and events by providing support for planning and implementation as needed
  • Independently manage student success initiatives and retention programs and will develop and assist with the creation of new initiatives by working with the CSS leadership staff initiatives and campus partners..
  • Coordinate meetings and outreach with students to teach academic & personal success strategies, inform about university policies, and make connections with critical resources

Required qualifications:

  • An earned master's degree (preferably in higher education/student affairs administration, counseling, or other area relevant to student affairs) and three years of work experience
  • Work independently in a self-directed manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse constituency; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment; writing experience.
  • Ability to prioritize diverse tasks and meet deadlines and results oriented
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, a collaborative disposition, and the ability to think both critically and strategically
  • Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Excel at working in a community that is diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, gender identity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a diverse team
  • Budget management and tracking experience
  • Ability to maintain organizational structure and cohesion in a changing environment
  • Exhibits initiative, responsibility, flexibility and leadership
